“Berliner Trott” – An Artwork for the Capital of Contrasts

“Berliner Trott” – A work of art for the capital of contrasts

Berlin moves. It’s exactly this energy, this constant forward motion and reorientation that flows into my current work “Berliner Trott”, which I had the honor of presenting at this year’s Berlin Art Prize.

This large-format acrylic painting (78.5 x 115 cm) depicts a powerful bear, walking calmly yet purposefully through an urban landscape. Through fluid brushstrokes and structured palette knife techniques, a dialogue emerges between animal and city – between natural presence and the vibrant everyday life of Berlin.

In the background, familiar elements appear – fragments of countless stories woven into the fabric of the city – rendered in subtle, atmospheric hues. The clear depiction of this setting contrasts with the expressive portrayal of the bear: broad and fine brushstrokes, combined with watercolor accents and textured palette work, give the animal a vivid, almost tangible surface. The interplay between tranquil water and defined architecture creates a compelling tension – raw, direct, alive.

“Berliner Trott” stands apart from my previous animal portraits. It merges motion with depth – without raising its voice. It’s a quiet, determined stride – one step after the other – just like the city itself. Berlin here is not idealized but experienced – in all its diversity, history, and contradictions.

The positive feedback on my participation has reaffirmed my desire to continue down this creative path and to increasingly position my work within an urban context.

The painting “Berliner Trott” (78.5 x 115 cm) will soon be available for purchase in the online shop h1z-art.com. If you’re interested in a striking one-of-a-kind piece with depth, stay tuned.
