At the edge of a still body of water, hidden in the dense green, a mother bear pauses briefly – as if she had long since noticed the viewer's gaze. In front of her, her cubs move through the riverside grass: one is still half hidden in the thicket, the other is already by the water. Muted light filters through the canopy and falls warmly on their fur, while deep shadows still lie between the blades of grass. The scene appears calm and at the same time alert. Almost as if everything could start moving again in the next moment. For me, this is the core of this work: in this narrow moment between protection and wilderness, closeness and unpredictability. The water reflects the animals in dark blue and green tones, as if the same scene exists simultaneously in two worlds.
Photos can only hint at texture, depth, and color brilliance – in reality, this painting is even more striking.
