This painting began with a laugh. The chimpanzee's pose struck me as so confident yet so comical that I immediately knew: I have to paint this. The longer I occupied myself with the motif, the more I noticed how familiar its expression seemed. There's something human in it – pride, curiosity, and a little bit of defiance.
When painting, my aim was not to create a realistic animal portrait. I was interested in the personality behind the gaze. That's why I worked with vibrant colors, spontaneous brushstrokes, and many layers. The tropical leaves frame the figure without drawing attention away from it.
For me, the painting tells of those surprising moments when we recognize ourselves in the animal world. It is a work that has character, stands out, and hopefully brings as much joy as it did to me while painting it.
Photos can only hint at texture, depth, and color brilliance – in reality, this painting is even more striking.
